Found in a chest near spawn. Whoever wrote it never came back for it.

The Lost Surveyor's Notes

One world, with its Nether and its End. Hard difficulty.

The seasons turn fast here, and the cold is real. Some of what walks at night is stronger than it looks.

The land near spawn is old. The far country is not.

The one rule

When you fall, go back. Everything you carried waits where you died, for whoever reaches it first.

Use means L2 on PS5, or tap on a phone.

Crouch means pressing the right stick on PS5, or the crouch button on a phone.

Commands are typed in chat. The ones that work are on the back page.

Surviving

Nothing is kept when you die. Almost nothing is lost, either.

Your grave

When you die, your things and all your XP go into a grave marked with your head.

HowUse it to open. Crouch + use takes everything and puts your armour back on.

Graves never fade. Graves never lock.

Where you fell

Chat tells you the spot in x, y, z. There's no respawn screen; you're back at once.

There is no road back but your own feet.

Other players

Everyone can hurt everyone. Leaving mid-fight is announced to all.

Choose your friends well.

Sleep

Half the players in the Overworld must sleep to skip the night. Phantoms never come.

A bad connection

When your connection stutters badly, nothing can hurt you until it recovers.

The creeper you never saw doesn't count.

Seasons & Cold

A whole year passes in about four hours. Dress for it.

The turning year

Spring, summer, autumn, winter, changing roughly every hour of play.

Your temperature

A small number on screen, in °F. Dark blue means you're cold. Green means you're fine.

What warms you

Armour, torches or fire nearby, sprinting, and hot food: baked potato, pumpkin pie, or any cooked meat or fish.

Night, rain, height and water pull the other way.

Cold

Below 14°F you slow down and grow hungry. Around −4°F the frost starts to hurt.

Watch for your own breath.

Heat

Above 122°F you slow, starve, then catch fire.

Watch for sweat. A desert in summer is not a friend.

Winter

Crops under open sky stop growing. More wolves, foxes and polar bears.

A roof changes everything. The skeletons in the snow are not quite skeletons. Look up on a winter night.

Summer

No rain all season. Crops under open sky grow faster. Zombies dry out into husks.

Autumn

Mushrooms push up through new ground. Some creatures arrive wearing pumpkins.

Spring

Flowers in new land, and more sheep, cows, pigs, rabbits and chickens.

Getting Around

Mark a few places as home. Build your roads anyway.

Homes

/sethome name marks where you stand. /home name takes you back. Up to ten each.

How/homes lists yours. /back returns you to where you were before your last jump.

/back does not find where you died. Your feet do.

Spawn and warps

/spawn takes you back to the start. /warp lists the shared places.

HowStand still for 5 seconds. Moving or taking a hit cancels it.

One warp already exists. Someone called it sabr. Go and see why.

To a friend

/tpa name asks to go to them. /tpahere name asks them to come to you.

HowThey answer /tpaccept or /tpdeny within 60 seconds.

Wool elevators

Stack wool of one colour with a gap between. Drop one ender pearl onto each block.

HowStand on it. Jump to rise, crouch to sink.

The pearl is gone for good. Break the wool and so is the elevator.

Portals

A Nether portal lights in any shape of obsidian, not only rectangles.

Boats

Boats hop up one-block steps instead of stopping dead.

Happy ghasts

A harnessed happy ghast flies over three times faster here, with friends aboard.

Wings and tridents

Rockets while gliding wait 5 seconds between boosts; riptide waits 3. Both wear gear faster.

Spamming rockets does nothing.

Wings for everyone

Ships in the End hold a locked vault instead of one lonely pair of wings.

HowHold a shulker shell and use it on the vault.

Shulkers drop two shells here. Only ships in newly explored End have vaults.

Danger

Hard means hard. Creepers crater, endermen steal, raids and wardens are real.

Not everything is ordinary

About one hostile mob in twenty is something more: armoured, tougher, hiding its powers until you fight.

HowHit it. A health bar appears, and “Weak!” or “Resist!” tells you if your weapon suits it.

Your weapon remembers

Each kind of weapon, and your armour, grows stronger the more you use it.

What the strange ones drop, you may not be able to hold. Not yet.

Shrines

Temples, shrines and ships stand in the far country. Some are occupied.

Their keepers have names.

The dragon

The dragon grows with every friend who comes to the End: more health, fireballs, lightning.

More friends, meaner dragon, better loot. Dragon eggs on the portal pillar anger it too.

Taking a spawner

Silk Touch takes a spawner half the time. Every try wrecks your pickaxe, costs half your health, and may explode.

It can only be placed against another spawner of the same mob.

Zombie villagers

On Hard, a villager killed by a zombie always turns.

HowCure it: splash potion of Weakness, then a golden apple.

Exploring

Walk further than feels sensible.

The far country

The land around spawn is old. Past about 3 km, new biomes, castles, towers, taverns and ruins begin.

The Nether changed too.

Loot is yours

Every chest, barrel and item frame found in the wild, and every trial vault, holds a separate copy for each player.

The temple your brother emptied is still full for you. Never store things in them.

Every recipe

Your recipe book knows every recipe from your first day.

The wandering trader

Chat tells you when one is near. It sells heads and tiny blocks.

The map

A live map of the world, with everyone on it: map.southminster.media

HowOpen it in a browser while on the house Wi-Fi.

You can find your own house from above.

Villagers

Villages here defend themselves, and copper works for a living.

Guards

Armoured villagers with swords or bows. They defend the village and never attack players.

HowDrop an iron sword near a weaponsmith, or a bow near a fletcher.

Guards pick up armour. Hand one a totem and see.

Trading halls

A villager penned in under a roof keeps trading and restocks on its own.

Copper golem jobs

Craft a Work Order and hand it to a copper golem. It works while a player is nearby.

HowUse the order on the golem, then on the chest it takes from, then where it delivers.

Work Order. The tool picks the job.
Farmhand iron hoe
harvests and replants crops
Courier hopper
moves items chest to chest
Stoker furnace
keeps furnaces fed
Restocker barrel
keeps a container topped up
Janitor brush
picks up dropped items
Sorter comparator
files items into matching chests
Collector bundle
gathers berries, melons, cane, amethyst

Only the golem's owner can give it a new job.

The whistle

Hold a copper ingot and use it to call your golems.

Tools & Building

Most of the old chores got shorter.

Falling trees

Chop the bottom log with any axe and the whole tree comes down, leaves and all.

HowCrouch to take one log. It stops before your axe breaks.

It won't replant for you.

Stonecutter tricks

Logs go in, stripped logs come out. A painting goes in, and you choose the exact picture.

The wrench

Turns repeaters, observers, droppers, pistons and glazed terracotta without breaking them.

Wrench

On console it may look like a poisonous potato named Wrench.

Cauldrons

Drop concrete powder into a water cauldron and it sets into concrete. Dirt becomes mud.

Anvils

Never “Too Expensive”. You still pay every level it asks.

Mending by hand

Crouch + use while holding a Mending item, and it repairs from your own XP.

Bottled XP

Use glass bottles on an enchanting table: 30 XP fills each one. Crouch to fill as many as you can afford.

You won't get it all back.

Bookshelves

Open a bookshelf like a chest and keep books in it.

An enchanting table notices which books surround it.

Double doors

Open one door of a pair and both open. Gates and trapdoors link too.

Hit a door to knock.

Quiet, please

Name tag a mob “silence me” and it goes silent. “unsilence me” undoes it.

Storage & Comfort

For the hoarders, and for the tired.

Drawers

Hold one item in huge numbers and show the count: small 512, medium 1,024, large 2,048.

HowUse the front to put items in. Crouch + use opens the upgrades.

Centre: empty = small, iron = medium, diamond = large.

Some upgrades are generous. The Void upgrade deletes overflow, forever.

Shulker boxes

Open one straight from your hand, even from inside your ender chest.

Sitting

With an empty hand, use stairs, slabs, carpet or snow to sit. Crouch to stand.

A friend's head is also a seat.

Patting

Crouch + use on any creature for hearts and a happy sound.

Worn-out gear

A line above your hotbar warns you when something is about to break.

Known Quirks

Things that behave oddly, especially on PS5 and phones.

  • Tapping ripe crops to harvest them does nothing on console. A Farmhand golem does it for you.
  • Don't put a chest directly on top of a double chest. On console it opens small and a ghost chest floats above you.
  • When the server strains, farms, hoppers and redstone pause, and arrows can vanish. It passes.
  • Decorative heads look plain on console and phones. Guards wear a plain purple head.
  • The map only opens on the house Wi-Fi, and freshly explored land can take a while to appear.
  • Some players' skins show as the default skin to everyone else. Leaving and rejoining may fix yours.
  • When nobody is on, the world sleeps; the first to join wakes it. It also restarts Saturdays at 5 a.m.

The rest of the pages are blank. Fill them yourself.
